First of all, in the morning people take bath and clean the main door and courtyard of the house and coat it with cow dung. After that colourful big and beautiful Rangoli is made. The temple and the main entrance of the house are decorated with banana and Ashoka leaves, amra pallava and flowers.
After this, all the members of the house together worship their presiding deity. After the puja, everyone greets each other and relishes specially prepared traditional dishes. On this day people gather in the temples and there the brahmins of the temple read the almanack and the horoscope of the new year to all the people. In many places, traditional arts like Ashtavadhanam, Shatavadhanam and Sahasravadhanam are also performed on this day.
